Key Winter Facts

Winter at Crater Lake is not for the faint of heart. With an average of 42 feet (13 meters) of snow per year, the park takes on a whole new personality. While the park is open throughout the year, winter road closures can significantly impact your visit.

🚫 Road Closures: Most park roads, including Rim Drive, are closed to vehicles in winter and instead become routes for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiles.

🚗 Access: The south entrance is the only plowed road leading into the park during winter, creating towering snowbanks on either side of the path. Pro tip: Ensure your tires are rated for winter conditions—it makes all the difference when navigating icy roads and maintaining reliable traction.

⚠️ Safety: Always check conditions before you go and ensure you have the right gear for winter weather. Frostbite is not the souvenir you want to bring home.

As the National Park Service notes, Crater Lake is both spectacular and challenging in winter, offering opportunities for adventure amidst its rugged beauty. It takes a little extra effort, but the payout is so worth it.

Tips for a Safe and Enjoyable Visit

Proper preparation is essential to make the most of your Crater Lake winter adventure. Here are some tips to help you stay safe and comfortable:

1. Dress in Layers:

  • Base Layer: Opt for moisture-wicking fabrics like merino wool to keep sweat from cooling you down.

  • Mid Layer: Add insulating layers to trap body heat.

  • Outer Layer: Choose windproof and waterproof shells to shield you from the elements.

2. Bring The Essentials:

  • Warm gloves and a beanie.

  • Snowshoes or cross-country skis for navigating snowy trails.

  • Plenty of water to stay hydrated.

  • A map or GPS device for navigation (Garmin inReach is a great piece of gear to keep in your kit year round).

  • Sunscreen. This may seem like such a strange thing to bring when it’s cloudy, but the glare bouncing off of snow can easily give your cheeks a new shade of red in winter months.

3. Check Conditions:

  • Use the Crater Lake webcams to monitor current weather and visibility. It feels like Facetiming nature in the moment.

  • Check trail conditions on AllTrails— user reviews are sometimes the best way to know the most recent hurdles.

  • Weather apps are important to check before heading out to be up to date on conditions.

4. Know Your Limits:

Winter travel requires extra caution. Stick to marked routes, and always inform someone of your plans before venturing out. It’s better to be safe than sorry any day of the week.

What To Expect When Visiting Crater Lake

As someone new to exploring during the winter months, the off-season is slowly becoming one of my favorite times to visit bucket-list destinations. Words can’t express how stunning it is to see nature in its most raw form. I first visited this beautiful place in 2021 during the summer when a wildfire was raging nearby. But seeing this winter wonderland in the middle of April? Absolutely mind-blowing and surreal.

My group of friends geared up and set out on a snowy trek to Rim Village. A word to the wise: Snowshoe rentals aren’t available in the park, so plan ahead. Check your local outdoor gear shop or an REI store for rentals.

What would typically be a quick five-minute drive along the rim in summer months turned into a memorable snowshoe adventure this time of year. We started at the southern entrances Visitor Center, a perfect spot to get your bearings and make a quick pit stop before hitting the Raven Ski Trail. The trail offers flexibility, allowing you to make the journey as long or as short as you’d like.

From the moment we arrived, the rangers warned us about the low chance of seeing the lake due to heavy clouds constantly dumping snow. But here’s the thing — even if the lake hides, the trail itself is worth it. The forest is enchanting, with moss-covered trees and snow-laden branches. Just watch out for those sudden flurries from above as the trees shake off their morning blanket of snow.

Around the two-mile mark, the real rewards began — those jaw-dropping views I had been working for. As we approached the top, the wind picked up, and snow-blown trees stood frozen in time. My camera was out in an instant. Shielding my face from the gusts, I marveled at the fleeting breaks in the clouds, where patches of blue sky teased us, and the sun struggled to make an appearance.

Pro tip: Spending the full day exploring this park is a blast. Pack a lunch and enjoy the incredible views from the top with sandwiches and hot chocolate. Nothing beats sipping cocoa while soaking in the winter wonderland.

A well-earned snack break gave us time to recover and let the sun work its magic. By the time we were ready to continue, the clouds had parted just enough to reveal the lake in all its glory. It was a moment that made every step worth it.

Why Winter is Worth It

Despite the challenges, experiencing Crater Lake in winter is an unforgettable adventure. The solitude, beauty, and tranquility of the park in snow offer a perspective few get to see. For those prepared to embrace the cold and venture into the quiet wilderness, the rewards are immense.

Whether you’re snowshoeing along Rim Drive, sipping hot cocoa while marveling at the snow-capped peaks, or simply soaking in the serene atmosphere, Crater Lake in winter is a bucket-list-worthy destination. Just remember: preparation is key to making your visit both safe and magical.

I hope your trip to Crater Lake is epic! Have fun and enjoy the journey along the way.
